Kuala Lumpur….. revisited

7th – 14th August

Staying in the Bukit Bintang area of Kuala Lumpur (in three different Hotels) proved to be 100% better than our night in Chinatown the other week. There were better Hawker food stalls, there was still poverty but less of it….either that or there are so many glittery, iconic and interesting things all around you don’t notice it as much.

We managed to coincide our second visit to KL with Hari Raya! busy! busy! busy! manic in fact, except for Titiwangsa Lake Park. We went there to get a skyline view of the Petronas Twin Towers and KL Tower and the only people we saw there were two couples hand in hand and two film crews! What is it with us and film crews at the moment.

BATU CAVES

272 Steps up to the Cave Temple!

The cave is one of the most popular Hindu shrines outside India, dedicated to Lord Murugan. Standing at 42.7 m high it is the world’s tallest statue of Lord Murugan, a Hindu deity.

Not sure who this chap is/was!
Who’s looking at who?
There were various Temples inside the caves but they did not make the final cut (wink)
the Monkeys got all the attention (smile)
And back down the 272 steps!
Some people we saw climbed the steps barefoot and one lady went up on her knees. Apparently devotee Hindus pay their penance and give thanks for wishes granted by climbing the steps this way.
It is difficult to show just how big it was. I know Glen isn’t tall but look how tiny he looks here.

We didn’t want to show favoritism so we also visited the Thean Hou Temple
a temple with elements of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.
More wonderful views of the KL Tower and Petronas Twin Towers from the top of the Temple.
Reflection of the KL Tower on a building along side a camel reminding us of Egypt (smile)

ALOR STREET
Entertainment comes to you wherever you are eating in Alor Street….. As do men selling wooden fruit bowls and laser torches which they flash onto the table as you are eating. That’s ok if they come around once but they do not remember you said no earlier and keep coming again and again….. I started by saying, “sorry they are an amazing design (they were) but we are pack packers and can’t possibly carry wooden fruit bowls around Asia….” But as they returned to our table again and again, I said less and less each time until I just ignored them eventually …… I just looked at the guy flashing the disco light torch pen thing and said “why? Why would I need that?”
Alor street hawker stalls
This street is not closed to traffic! Even though there are tables in the street, the cars still crawl through like some sort of Xbox game trying to drive over people’s toes for fun!
We clocked the ‘frog porridge’ and gave this place a miss!
